Energy Control is a harm reduction program aimed at the general population of drug users. Chem-Safe is a project of Energy Control that was established in 2017 to respond to the sexualized use of drugs. Today, we are particularly addressing anyone, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation, who uses psychoactive substances in sexual contexts, the diverse individuals who participate in Chemsex /Party and Play sessions, and the LGBTI+ community that uses substances. We also address the drug use of the LGBTI+ population in any context.

When sending the results through Chemsafe we also include information on how substances affect the sexual sphere.

We currently have these types of analytical methods:

Thin-layer chromatography (TLC)
Gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS)
Liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC/MS)
Ultraviolet spectrophotometry (UV-Vis)
High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC-DAD)
Liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC/MS) with chiral column

It is not necessary to calibrate the machines, but the analytical methods (substances). Every analytical method we are going to use we know if it is working properly because we use purchased substances as analytical standard and in addition we use control samples. These samples are used to check that all the methodology in that batch has gone well and the control value is as expected.

On the other hand, most of the equipment is previously checked to confirm that it is in good condition and this is done by means of software.

We are aware of this issue, as we have found many modified PDF by vendors in their listings. We have been working since the pandemic on improving our IT infrastructure, and providing a safe method to verify the results is one of our top priorities. Also, the website to check the results is being redone and will have more features, one of them being able to pay in many cryptos

Could you use certified PDFs where the document has an embedded cryptographic signature & certificate so it can't be altered without breaking the signature?

My partners and I will have wild nights every month or two binging & mixing 4-MMC, Ketamine & weed together. Sometime ghb as well. Though it's easiest to assume that we use the leftover substances, this is incorrect:

  • Most of the time, there is no leftover substance. We ask for the minimun amount required for analysis.
  • If there are leftovers, we keep them for two months in case it is necessary to perform the analysis again or if there is any claim.
  • We have a sample bank stored for developing new analytical methods or improving them (control samples). We also use them for training volunteers or external staff on how to use analytical methodologies, colorimetric reagents, and in research projects in collaboration with other scientific institutions such as universities.
  • We also use them for companies or startups that contact us and want to test their product with samples acquired from the unregulated market (like fentanyl strips).
  • But the vast majority are destroyed in a biological waste container that is subsequently destroyed by a specialized company.

The extraction of LSD from blotters and gel tabs was performed with methanol/water 50:50 and sonicated for 18 minutes, as described in several validated methodologies on LSD extraction from samples. The thickness of the blotters does not affect the extraction, since the ultrasound force opens the fibers so that the solvent can penetrate inside. The gel tabs dissolve perfectly in the methanol/water mixture.
Next, if the test is only qualitative, the substances present can be identified using thin layer chromatography (TLC) and reactive colorimetric tests.
If it is desired to quantify the blotter, we use liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS), ideal for analyzing thermosensitive compounds or those requiring precision and sensitivity such as LSD or fentanyl.

From the analyses we have performed over the years, we can guarantee that the quantitative accuracy of the analyses does not exceed 10%. We should remember that Energy Control is not a drug quality service, but a harm reduction service. Therefore, an error of 10% appears to be good enough for this purpose.
It should also be noted that there are sources of error in the sample itself. For example, if the sample is not well homogenized, the result will probably not be accurate.

What is the highest purity you've ever found for a MDMA sample which you tested? Is there any error or variance in the results for your MDMA purity testing results?

I read somewhere that MDMA hydrochloride is your standard. What will happen, hypothetically, if you received a sample which was 70% MDMA hydrochloride and 30% MDMA free base? What will the test show for the purity of this sample?

Indeed, we use MDMA hydrochloride as the standard MDMA. But we give the result on free base. So a sample of MDMA HCl could not be more than 87% base purity, which equals 100% HCl. Sometimes we get results of 91-92%. In these cases, this value may be due to measurement errors. We accept a margin of error of 6%. Or there may be some base mixed in with the HCl. I do not believe that we have encountered a crystal with 30% free base, because in these cases the appearance would be very sticky (the base is liquid) and we have not received samples with this appearance.

The amphetamine samples are first analyzed with FTIR-ATR to know the type of amphetamine salt (sulfate, hydrochloride, or phosphate). For GC/MS or LC/MS quantification, we use standard sulfate and calculate the amount of other salts by the ratio of their molecular weights.

Some substances degrade very easily, so our analytical standards also degrade, so we have to calculate the amount degraded with the standard of the degrading analyte. This is the case of 4-ACO-DMT which degrades to 4-HO-DMT. Another case is that of CBCA, which degrades rapidly to CBC. There are also matrices in which the extraction of the substance is very complex, for example, jelly beans. In these cases, we can also lose precision. When a substance is received, we confirm that the sample code is correct, then we prepare it in our on-site laboratory. Next, we transport it to the laboratory at "Hospital del Mar Medical Research Institute". There we have the most advanced and precise machinery and analytical techniques. Regarding the storage of the sample:
  • Most of the time, there is no leftover substance.
  • If there are leftovers, we keep them for two months in case it is necessary to perform the analysis again or if there is any claim.
  • We have a sample bank stored to develop or improve new analytical methods (control samples). Energy Control was founded in 1997 and has always been directed towards the general population, even to this day. In 2017, Chem-Safe was created to cater to this population, as well as the heterosexual population who use drugs in these contexts.

Over the years, we have noticed that the LGBTI community is unaware that they can access substance analysis because we have not focused on it.

Every person has the right to analyze substances and receive key information about the substances they are taking. That is why we are adapting the service, but under the name Chem-Safe. However, it should be emphasized that it is not an exclusive service for this particular community.

First of all, we do not focus only on the LGBTI+ population, in ⚠️About us⚠️ it clearly states the following: "Our target audience includes individuals of all gender identities and sexual orientations who use psychoactive substances in sexual contexts, the diverse individuals participating in Chemsex/Party and Play sessions, and the LGBTI+ community that engages in substance use”.

We do mention it, because after 26 years, this population does not know us and does not access usTherefore, we are doing something wrong in our work when it comes to including other people who also use substances (we need to create more messages and adapt them to other realities). Moreover, among those who practice Chemsex, according to French pharmacovigilance studies, there is an increase in serious cases and associated deaths due to mephedrone adulteration and poly-drug use.

Keep in mind that we do not only test substances, we also advise and we do it beyond the substance. For that reason, a current priority with regard to the care of individuals is to include cultural competencies and thus care for everyone.
