📍 You're here!

You should be able to know the basics of GPG, or be able to find this information if Kleopatra or your GUI crashes when you attempt to decrypt a message.

Nice post!

my understanding is that GnuPG is an alternative to Kleo for PGP. please correct me if i am wrong.

so what is the benifit to using GnuPG instead of Kleo? i think i read somewhere that GnuPG can have unique additional private keys assiciated with individual messages where Kleo cannot? if true, then you can use those unique private keys to give to a DNM mod to be able to see speicific messages to a vendor to resolve a dispute. what other benefit is there?

thank you.

It's not exactly that. Kleopatra is a graphical user interface (GUI) built on top of GnuPG. It just brings the nice buttons and textboxes, but every action you take is still executed through your local install of GPG. The key ring is the same, global settings too. For more insights, check /d/gnupg (under renovations!).
Now, GPG works only as command line interface. Because of that, it offers plenty of options that Kleopatra doesn't include. Session messages (the "additional private keys" you mentioned) are one of them. We had discussions about it earlier on. I'll make a guide about it a bit later. In the meantime, check /post/8949f83e97475cdbf923/#c-aff0d5a94d7440d495.

if true, then you can use those unique private keys to give to a DNM mod to be able to see speicific messages to a vendor to resolve a dispute. what other benefit is there?

That's about it, I guess. The same will work in any context where there's additional, trusted metadata to authenticate the communication. I'm sure there is other situations where they are appropriate but the mod dispute is the most obvious one.

thank you for the detailed response.

yes! that is the post where i read that! good find!

i find it odd that kleopatra doesn't support session messages.. and that session messages are not a must

maybe i am missing something here? - so if there is a dispute in between a vendor and a buyer and the market is the mediator. you have to give the market your private key for all messages on that market for that whole year or two? seems like i am missing something here, that cannot be correct.

or maybe you are supposed to change your pgp key after each buy? (i think i read in the bible once that it is best practise for market keys to be short lived while forum keys can be a year or two)

i used Kleopatra for roughly 6-7 years, but just recently switched to mac about a year ago and i LOVE GPG suite wayyyy more.

its way faster for everything. you can just highlight the text and right click and press encrypt/decrypt/SIgn, and a new window pops up with the decrypted/encrypted message, instead of having to paste it onto Kleopatra.

idk if you're familar with it, but its awesome.

Well... I wrote another tutorial for it https://torhoo.cc/go.php?u=TDNCdmMzUXZORE0yWkdWbU9EYzBOVGs1WWpaaFl6STVPRE09# :)
Full disclosure I don't have access to an Apple device and I'm actively looking for reviewers https://torhoo.cc/go.php?u=TDNCdmMzUXZaVE14TjJSak1HVTJPRFUyWkdNeE16Y3hORFE9#/#c-20904b5785622585c0. Worked from videos and screenshots. Take a peek if you have a few minutes to spare! I'll be happy to read your feedback. That being said, I agree with you. Looks really practical to use. But the embedding withing the OS is... Concerning. For anything illegal anyway.
