Better late than never? BIBLE UPDATE! (MEOW) : DNMBible | Torhoo darknet markets

This update is probably 6 months over due. For my own sanity of having to live it all again, I'll keep this short. Simply everything that could go wrong went wrong while working on this update. Local systems crashing, files getting corrupted, git imploading, (twice) Tails releasing tails 5 the day before it was going to be updated. You name it, it went wrong. BUT FINALLY The newest update is complete!

What's new?

I will probably miss a few things because I started this update so long ago. But here is some of it!

  • Whonix has gotten a big overhaul. You can now view most of the main section in Tails or Whonix. Meaning in the PGP chapter it will show you how to do it in Tails or you can click the Whonix tab and view how to use GPA.
  • PGP section has been updated to Kleopatra for Tails, and GPA for Whonix.
  • Gajim+Omemo guide has been added!
  • Backing up now includes the backup utility.
  • I2P has been added! You can now download the files for I2P from Dread! Special thanks to https://torhoo.cc/go.php?u=TDNVdlJHVlRibUZyWlE9PQ==# for this, and allowing Dread to host the files.
  • How to verify an onion chapter now encourages users to compare pgp keys with multiple trusted sources.
  • Broken Links for Local Monero and installing Tails from Windows have been fixed. Along with other broken onions.
  • /u/SocietalActivities has been added to the harm reduction section
  • /u/tordottaxi added to the Resources area.

Other small random things that I know I am forgetting, but now it's time for Shaky to get a drink.

Because our old git is no longer with us we have a new one. You can view the source code, or if you are someone that hosts a copy of the bible you can find the update here: https://torhoo.cc/go.php?u=YUhSMGNEb3ZMelJwY0c5Mk5ta3lNMkZoYmpjMWVqWTJOR0V5Y1dNMU4yUmhkbVozZEhoMWJHaHphVE4wZEdWbWFXWnlZbVZ5YzJKaGMybzNkM0ZrTG05dWFXOXVMMFJPVFM5Q2FXSnNaUT09#

I don't have it in a PDF, but the offline edition works great. Can be opened in any browser whether it's connected to the internet or not. You can either download the zip file right from Dread (/bible.zip) Or you can run the script that we made. It's on the git. Download the source code. Open the source code folder in terminal and run the generate file. It will convert everything automatically and put it into a zip file

Some vendors find it annoying. It's not a big deal if it's signed, but it also doesn't serve a purpose. A vendor isn't going to be verifying your signature.

Are the good vs. bad keys mirror.txt the same?
/u/Shakybeats 📢 M

There is two signatures on the /mirrors.txt page. If you imported the key, the top will show a good signature. The bottom will show a bad signature since it was modified after being signed.
/u/testudo

They both show bad for me, and appear to be identical.
Sry - I've never really had any success using PGP to verify things - perhaps there is some other primer I should consume first?
/u/Shakybeats 📢 M

Did you import the key first?

The signatures will look identical. The bottom one is modified from the top signature which makes it come back bad.

I imported the key from pgp.txt - both the top and bottom signatures in mirror.txt come back as bad for me.

Make sure you copy all of the pgp message including the dashes. It just came back fine for me.

I know this is an absolutely stupid and no0b question, but is tails completely necessary for the DNM? Are tor and I2P not enough?
/u/Shakybeats 📢 M
1 points
Yes. It is necessary. Take your opsec seriously even if you are a small buyer.

The point of all these tools is to keep you safe.

Could you go outside a police station and and buy drugs off someone? Sure you could, you might never even get caught. But that's stupid, and you would take precautions to make sure you are safe. It's the same thing here, take precautions to keep yourself safe. It's the low hanging fruit that are easily busted.

If you're using Tails. Don't save it in your persistence folder. Save it in the Tor Browser (Persistence) Or Tor Browser folder and manually move it.

In the spirit of the great work offered, I must address the elephant in the room:
Why does a collection of informative text, even if perhaps it contains hyperlinks inside of it for ease of reading, HAVE to be a zip or tar.gz file that is hosted somewhere and downloaded locally?

I understand that the code is available for all to view, it can be compiled and built by anyone, and every last binary digit can be verified.
Still, if you all can host dread itself as a TOR website without JS/etc., why can't this be done the same way?
Thank you!

does the bible recommend to create new accounts ever so often to make sure your vendor or market place is safe? i was thinking if a vendor or market gets compromised they will now have your address and perhaps your name if you used your real name like the bible says to use. i'm guessing deleting your account and recreating it would provide some help.
/u/Shakybeats 📢 M
1 points
I think it is in there, but I will have to go back and look. I know it talks about if you use the same pgp key, and names across markets.

Generally it's up to you as a buyer to decide if you want to constantly make new accounts, or use the same one. A market should never have your address. You should be encrypting yourself. That way even if the servers are seized by LE they can't read it.

Creating a new account each time can be good for opsec. Sometimes you will come across vendors that don't want to deal with new accounts, or if you are in a dispute it could make you seem less credible.
/u/meme516

Shaky- i've always wondered... when you place an order say on incognito. you buy the product, you put in the payment, and include the name and address. When the order goes in, does the order get encrypted? If i message a vendor, i make sure my messages are auto-deleted after 24 hours. Should i still be sending a PGP signed message or is it safe to assume that orders are encrypted?
/u/Shakybeats 📢 M
1 points
You should never assume it's encryped. One of the top rules is never trust a market to encrypt anything sensitive for you. Even if they say they auto encrypt. Do not trust them to do it. Always manually encrypt it yourself so you know it is done properly.

You never know if they are actually encrypting it for you.
You never know if it's being saved in a clear text before encrypting it.
You never know if LE compromised their servers, and is taking the data before it is encrypted.

The example everyone should remember is what happened with Hansa market. LE took over Hansa. They had a auto encrypt feature. LE changed it to save the details in a clear text before it encrypted it.

Always assume the market you are using is compromised, or could become compromised.

Ubuntu is not recommended. You can read why from the Whonix devs here http://www.dds6qkxpwdeubwucdiaord2xgbbeyds25rbsgr73tbfpqpt4a6vjwsyd.onion/wiki/Host_Operating_System_Selection#Linux_Hosts

You should also read this chapter of the bible. It talks about host operating systems. You are only as strong as your weakest point. If you don't use a secure host it doesn't matter which OS you use in a vm.
