Happy 4th Birthday Dread! : Dread | Torhoo darknet markets

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA256

Wow another year. We're still here and still pushing the boundaries in terms of longevity and persistence.

Whilst I'm no where nearly as active and productive as I used to be, I'm happy the platform still provides the service I intended from the start. Many things have changed over the years, the landscape of onions as a whole and the threats we have faced. There has once again been a lot of destabilization since the DoS attacks started against Dread and Dream in 2019 and whilst we've been able to counter that with the likes of end game and Tor's minor patches, as well as the move to v3 onions, I wouldn't say we're in too much of a better position, we can just handle things better.

Myself, Paris and Dread as a whole has seriously suffered from this, my own motivation and mental health whilst dealing with a lot of other matters has really depleted. But I just want to thank everyone, especially Paris, our global mods and everyone who continually provides help to other's here, producing useful, informational content and keeping the dream alive really.

I do apologize with the direction Dread started to head in, it is no longer providing as much viability for the community and reaching new goals, which I tried so hard to achieve in the past. I want to make it clear that we are working to improve the status of things for everyone, the first step is getting the long awaited Dread update live, which provides a lot of life with a variety of needed and much requested features, huge bug fixes and solves the issues of bad captchas, spam and manipulation. Nothing will ever be perfect as we do work within a multitude of restrictions of course, but raising the bar is a good start.

The update is in the final stages of testing and bug fixing, just 2 days ago I pushed my final overll changes before we do a full bug sweep again and I will be publishing improved moderation tools for Dread staff. I do expect this to go live within the next week, if not much sooner, but everything should be solid and we can finally move onto making sweet love to Recon, as it deserves and has needed for a while now. With Recon coming up to the standards I intended before launch, I would also like to announce that we will be launching 2 new platforms in the coming months. More details on these will be made available closer to the time.

Anyway, thank you one and all for the continued support and for anyone waiting patiently to be able to search posts again or simply to create an account, you won't be waiting much longer at all.

Happy 4th Birthday Dread, I hope to see you all for the 5th Birthday post, where things will hopefully be on a much brighter note.

I'll get back to work now, stay safe all.

/u/HugBunter Thank you for all that you and your team have done to maintain Dread for the community. While shortcomings were mentioned what was noticeably omitted was the fact that Dread remains a unique forum on the dnm, unmatched by any competitor for what Dread already provides pre-update.

If Dread were to be taken down tomorrow well there is always (crickets) to go to as a backup. With Dread being so reliable some people seem to take it for granted yet when the occasional offline status does occur it puts a big void in many people's day.

Thank you!!!

> Dread remains a unique forum on the dnm, unmatched by any competitor for what Dread already provides pre-update.

> If Dread were to be taken down tomorrow well there is always (crickets) to go to as a backup.

The only reason hugbunter made dread is because he was smart enough to realize a couple things, all the idiots talking about trafficking drugs on the clearnet and the lack of an outlet to do the same on the darknet. Dread is essentially a reddit clone with more competent admin with security and coding experience. Honestly though if Dread went don't there would be another clone up within weeks. The exact same cycle that happens with markets going down happens with forums. People migrate. How many drug forums have there been over the past 20 years? The only think that makes dread unique is it runs on an onion, it allows sourcing, and it has the most annoying captchas in the history of capchas. Besides running and Tor and sourcing what exactly is unique about a message board? That fact it is public? There are numerous private discussion boards on Tor serving the exact same function. Dread is nice but but it only because what it was due the the reddit ban and it is why even 4 years later it still has a fraction of the users.

I do mostly agree, but it would take a lot for a new platform to become such a centralized discussion point, rather than the community scattering to various different platforms. Dread has saw way more growth than the Reddit sub ever had in a shorter period too, baring in mind we have purged hundreds of thousands of inactive accounts and still continue to do so. The vast majority of Reddit subscribers were throwaway accounts, which again exist here, but can and will be purged at times but there is a much lesser need for throwaways when everything is a lot more anonymous. I'd be very impressed if anyone built anything that matches up to Dread, the Reddit board style is perfect for our uses and it would require something developed and built for purpose as was Dread. I wouldn't expect markets to eagerly take their discussion to a new platform, rather than return to hosting their own forum boards for the market, that's where a lot of the value is in Dread.

And just to be clear hugbunter, I am showing *zero* disrespect. I have always loved and respected your work since I first found your pentesting. I had just finished my masters in cybersecurity focused in network security as the time and was surprised to see you were finding big holes I was completely. I respect you like a motherfucker, I do code for a living and if I had to guess I am fairly confident you are more intelligent then me. You not only had the knowledge but the *desire* to set up dread and I respect.

You are a cool ass dude man. I know they way I come off sometimes can sound abrasive but I was more just pointing towards the cyclical nature or these things. I was serious about the captcha part though. I can't keep a loaded gun on the desk if I am trying to login to this site lol

Don't worry I didn't take any offense, I just meant with the lifecycle of things, nothing really comes along that innovates, where I think I did exactly that with Dread and anyone could have developed and maintained a Reddit style board in these 4 years, ready for a potential fall or during us being DoS'd to take advantage of it, but I don't think you'll see anything more than standard pre-built forums overall. That is unless I am able to open source Dread in the mean time, which is still the plan.

This is probably a lame question and my knowledge with how coding and implementing features on a site like Dread is basically zero.

Would it ever be possible to add other text features, such as emojis or maybe other features that could add a little more spice and entertainment to discussions? Like options to add polls directly from each text box. Sorta like the options Twitter has when you create a tweet. Or instead of clicking the formatting options tab, and searching for the correct code to apply, would it just be possible to add options that would allow you to just select a specific line of text and directly color the text, change the size and font of the text, or underline, bold, etc.

Again, probably a lame ass question in your eyes, however; I'm just curious if something like this would be worth the trouble, or even a good idea?

I think in a way it almost would encourage people to be more active to have more easily accessible options like those I listed.
Personally, I think the option to add a poll to below the text box would be a great idea and beneficial for vendors and buyers.

The reason why there is limitations in emojis on dread is because of how the database is design. Currently we have a 4 byte unicode system which limits the amount of utf space which is available to be shown. Because of this emojis are limited.

Polls are in the new update. But only for posts. We can't add in options for text formatting without Javascript. It's impossible with the current css and html spec.

Open Source Dread could be a better community code source
Reddit, when sourcing subs were tolerated, was wonderful but it was too public. I was searching the main reddit page and what did I find? A testosterone review!!! This was linked to a subreddit /r/steroidsourcetalk where schedule 3 steroids were openly sold on clearnet. Do you see what I did there? I stumbled upon it. I did not actively search it out. At least here you won't find church ladies accidentally finding a meth sub.

Dread has given users on the dark web a platform to focus, discuss, share, and help themselves or others.
Perhaps it is now more than just a forum site, it represents the memories of many people, and many people have contributed to the progress of Dread.
Well stated!

seriously, congratulations on making it four fucking years. thats an eternity on the DN scene. I have only been around for 1 of those 4 years, but i can easily say that your forum has changed my life.

I don't use any regular, clearnet social media. i loathe social media, actually. but having the ability to be completely open and free on your forum while still maintaining privacy is a gift i think a lot of dread users take for granted. i have learned and grown so much because of the killer opsec info on these subdreads. the value of this forum is simply priceless.

drink a beer, snort a line, and celebrate. heres to four more!

also, TAKE CARE OF YOUR MENTAL HEALTH. it affects us in ways we not obvious until its too late.
seriously.
that is all.

Dread keeps the DN a place that I still want to be. I feel like without it, it would be an absolute wild west. HugBunter and Paris are genuinely goodgood people that want to create a useful and progressive community without using it's power to scam and get rich off it's users, which is nearly impossible to find especially on the DN.

I feel like as time goes on more and more scams are moving out of the DN and directly into the CN. App popularity has manifested a whole new world of insanity, and here these dudes are still striving to just make the best possible tight knit forum where anything goes and nothing is censored. Information is free and there's so many useful resources and networking opportunities.

Great work y'all.
Now update your goddamn canaries on time so we don't have to worry.❤️

Very grateful for Dread, so don't take the following the wrong way.

I do think Dread admin can do more to protect DNM users. In the last 6 months, what, 6 DNMs have gone down? And only 1 did completely right by users (Torrez); another half-assed it (WHM).

All these markets, except for 1 (Monopoly), had one thing in common: on-market wallets. Why are such markets still allowed to even be listed on Dread??

I know being listed on Dread isn't endorsement, but let's get real: if it's on Dread, people are paying attention.

So there should be standards. As far as I'm concerned, any market with an on-site wallet should automatically be unfit for listing.

Yes, I understand a direct-to-escrow market still has the potential to exit scam, but the opportunity cost matters. Capturing funds in wallets provides far greater opportunity to scam than capturing funds in escrow until released directly to vendor.
In other words, if Dark0de and Monopoly had the same number of users, Dark0de is sure to run exit scam with a larger pot than Monopoly. But we still allow Dark0de??
After all the praise heaped on WHM, how the hell did Dark0de ... did we allow Dark0de to become a huge market?? (And ironically, WHM had an on-market wallet, but at least there was a direct-to-escrow option.)

Further, any market that doesn't offer multisig BTC or Monero (and only because Monero doesn't have multisig yet) should also be unfit to be listed. Might even go so far as to say if not exclusively these two (or either one), it shouldn't be on Dread.

I just don't understand that the founder of Dread burst onto the scene hacking markets and since then standards for markets have barely budged. Yea, security is a bit better, but exit scams are worse than ever. Ironic and sad.

I'm almost tempted, and cynical enough, to say that Dread is perhaps more concerned with its own potential gain than with users. After all, restricting market listings also means reducing ad revenue for Dread. It's very clear that if even the basic standards I put forth here are followed, right now only 1 market would be eligible and that is Versus.

I get why people would think this way. But dread is not a regulatory body and we have minimal soft power when it comes to the inner-workings of the scene at large. We do demand certain things like no weapons, hitman services, or no child porn among others. Ultimately though it's not our place to tell a market how they should function when it comes to the marketplace at large. If they want to offer on site wallet addresses and people choose to use those markets that's for the people at large to decide.

I think ultimately it goes down to what people are looking for. You value having that extra protection against exit scams. Versus is a perfect market for you in that regard. Others like a certain user experience and don't worry too much if they lose a few hundred when a market goes down. Just the nature of this business. Remember you are working with criminals that have minimal oversight. Other than simple cautions and information exchanges if a market admin decides it's time to leave, they leave. Suddenly and without warning. Gone like they didn't exist in the first place.

Fair enough.

How about a Dread-endorsed ratings system as a compromise then?

No standards for listing, so everything as before. But now a recognizable and easily understable rating standard for OpSec.

Here's a start:

For DNM potential to exit scam (lower is better):
1. Multisig only
2. Direct Deal (DD)
3. Onsite escrow (Direct Pay with escrow/Direct-to-escrow)
4. Onsite wallet (deposit optional)
5. Forced onsite wallet&escrow (must deposit to pay)
(e.g., Versus - 2, Monopoly - 3, WHM - 4, Dark0de - 5)

There is trade offs which can't be easily just categorized down to a numeric list. Monero doesn't really have usable multisig, which means a Multisig only market is going to just use bitcoin which is not private at all. Direct deals have their own problems because vendors can just not ship and there is nothing a person can do about it. Onsite escrow and onsite wallet is basically the same thing. If the main wallet gets fucked, the whole site gets fucked. Same thing for 5 as well just with both of them. Ultimately the risks are all there. People should just learn not to put in more than they are willing to lose because right now they can lose it unless they want to use bitcoin and risk the privacy implications.

The focus was on DNM potential to exit scam, so it's more about encouraging markets towards certain standards without forcing.

Hey, thanks for reading anyway.

Adding on to what /u/Paris said. Sure we can set some basic standards for being on Dread, but we can barely get buyers to learn PGP. It would be great if more users used multisig, or took their opsec more serious. I've tried to push multisig for users/markets a lot. The reality a majority of buyers just want the easiest possible way to buy drugs.

If we set the bar high all it takes is a few shit markets to come along, sweep up all the low hanging fruit on reddit. Buy a few ads on big named sites and quickly shoot to the top market. It also limits the amounts of discussions users can have about markets.

"(And ironically, WHM had an on-market wallet, but at least there was a direct-to-escrow option.)"

Dark0de had direct-to-escrow option too, at least during the 4 months since WHM closure that I was using it they always had the direct-pay option that went straight to escrow.

"After all the praise heaped on WHM, how the hell did Dark0de ... did we allow Dark0de to become a huge market??"

By default. It was the oldest market left standing. The old paradigm was that the longer the market had been around, the better the market. No longer is that true. The new paradigm is the better the market, the sooner the owners cash the fuck out and get out altogether. That means mediocrity like dark0de can sometimes rise to the top by virtue of being the most recognizable market left standing.

Think about it, when a market as shitstained as dark0de can rise to the top it is proof positive that if you start a dnm market you need only do the bare minimum of keeping it open for two years. Even with no improvements and negligible expenditure you're practically guaranteed to become top market by default when superior competitors will have already left the scene.

you're right.

and Dread gets ad revenue from ALL these markets. 90%+ of them have onsite wallets, which makes exit scams most lucrative. so obviously banning markets with onsite wallet would kill their ad revenue base. economics never lies.

Versus was older. But I get that multisig is hard. But onsite wallets are worse and with forced deposits are the worst. To me, these shouldn't be allowed on Dread for 100k+ people to learn about.

But it was fun to watch Paris contort himself to justify allowing it because of "discussion". So then why worry about markets with security leaks? There's PGP - use it or bust. Allow discussion of weakly secured markets.
But the fact that the Dread founders happen to be hackers... I'm sure that's the bias here. Because, honestly, what's the damn difference?

I completely get where you're coming from although I am a bit dubious about Dread's ability to enforce such a standard unless they had buy in and compliance from the major clearnet gatekeepers like dark.fail and tor.taxi.

Because with the current market demographics running at 20:1 of markets that have onsite wallets is it even realistic to expect dread to cut themselves off from 95% of their ad revenue to try and force such compliance?

It's really tragic that the legacy feature of onsite wallets can't be obsoleted soon enough, I completely agree. I'm more of the mind that it has to come organically from a market leader stepping up and establishing it as the defacto new standard, like WHM did with XMR.

If Monopoly was still around and their owner wasn't such an antisocial prick maybe they could have set the new bar. But right now if dread tried to implement such a standard they'd only be cutting themselves off from their primary re because nearly all markets have onsite wallets and how many of them are going to change to so they can advertise on dread and keep their subdreads? In my opinion, probably not many.

Justifying it because of "discussion" was weird and good point on the security bias. I hadn't thought of that angle.
/u/[deleted]

It is tragic. Truly.

And I definitely cannot argue with the economics. Look at the politics of just about every liberal democracy, esp the US.

But I'm sad that even suggesting a ratings system, not enforcement, got another contortionist response (see response from Paris above). This leads me to believe that, much like in politics, Dread admin are loathe to even offend their benefactors, let alone enforce standards on them, when they can't even just say we deem XMR only, PGP everywhere, and lack of onsite wallets a better standard.

I've been saying all this since WHM - and probably even before that. I guess I better move on. Exit scams are worse than ever, so now I wonder how Dread has actually improved the landscape.
In fact, an argument could be made they're contributing the exit scams, making it more lucrative by gathering 100k+ people together in 1 place - a platform where a market can easily launch.

(Btw, XMR is an option, not a standard. Tragic again. Even after the efforts of WHM. If I'm not mistaken, only Alpha Bay follows the WHM example on that.)
/u/strace

Well, it's hard to even call the US a democracy anymore when minority rule is perfectly legal and constitutional and occurs as often as it has the last couple decades. Maybe a liberal plutocracy would be the more appropriate nomenclature. But yeah I definitely see your point and its disappointing while not surprising.

What alarms me more is the proactive censorship condoned by Paris and enforced by other mods when dark0de was showing all the signs of exiting soon, the warning bells were going off yet the warning posts were deleted as fud. That policv deserves scrutiny and a rethink since it's clearly counterproductive and harmful.

And you're right about XMR enforcement only being really AB for now. But before WHM no one was even using XMR. WHM enforcing the standard made its adoption universal and used by all dnm markets now. In my opinion the next trailblazer could easily cement the tradition by following in WHMs footsteps. Maybe that will be AB.

Seems in the end we're just a big college frat party that invited all the neighborhood cartels, thugs and degens to come join the party and set up shop. No progressive, far-reaching change here - just a bunch of guys who wanna get high or rich, or both, off drugs.

So far DeSnake is good about accepting and responding to community feedback. But yea, they're all great, then they become a top market. Cust svc suffers, then plans for exit.

It's time for decentralized market... Too bad OpenBazaar concept never caught on.

"No progressive, far-reaching change here - just a bunch of guys who wanna get high or rich, or both, off drugs."

It's a wonder anyone ever had any illusions it was anything else. I guess DPR built a libertarian ethos into SR1. But IMO that was always wishful thinking.

I'm skeptical that a decentralized market can really be decentralized. Someone has to be in charge of moderating disputes. Thats where the power will lie ... which implies it will still be centralized in all but name.

You're right.
Just even the fact that so many markets or even Dread admin refuse to take a bold stand on fentanyl ("if there's demand for it and it can be dosed safely, prohibition leads to greater harm"), but instead go with the mainstream media hype ("oh no, fent is coming to kill all our babies!!")
But still I try... /post/a3433faca919b5a8c565

The mod issue I think can be solved right here from Dread. If I'm not mistaken, OB does have an arbitration system that can be added to orders and the arbiters are paid from purchase funds.
So I would think the mods right here on Dread, many of whom already have a reputation for fairness, can easily be nominated - and actually get paid to do what they do for a change (maybe 1-5% of purchase price).
And of course their reputation may precede them to start, but their performance as an arbiter continues to be judged.
Assignment should also be random to avoid bias. So you can pick arbitration for an order, but you cannot pick who.
/u/strace

That's really quite a great idea, but I'm pretty sure AB has no plans to utilize their subdread for that when they have their own forum. Id prefer to see it on dread but I can see the need to keep something like the business of dispute resolution in house. As personal as that shit must get with the mud flinging everywhere that it requires an arbitrator I'd hate to see it spillover into flame wars on dread by users who feel they got worked by mods.

Oooh and thats a great point on fent that I hadn't considered. If it leads to harm reduction via less deaths from fent then it'd be hard to argue, but I'd be interested if thats actually the case. I'm thinking if its sold out in the open to be so easily accessible it might be bought by unscrupulous vendors as a cut for heroin or pressed into pills to increase potency which would increase number of fatal overdoses. That's a quagmire I'd like to see hard data on.

Wow. 4 years this masterpiece has been at work. And we can only have the awesome admins/Dread staff like /u/HugBunter, /u/Paris, /u/Shakybeats and others for providing us such an awesome place to congregate and talk freely about our interest(mostly being illicit substances and the culture around them).

There's never been another place I feel I could go and confide to ask someone about a substance, just you know get educated, without it being thrown in my face and being called a "drug addict". But Dread, is that place. It's almost my 2nd home at this point. And I look forward to what the future holds for us.

Also want to give a huge shoutout to my awesome benzo friend who is the main moderator of the benzo section:
