More On Using The Official GUI v0.18.3.1 On Tails 6.0 - Newer Process Inside : Monero | Torhoo darknet markets
Right, mates, here's the full process I've come up with using the official Monero GUI v0.18.3.1 with Tails 6.0. It's a bit clumsy because the settings are not being saved by Tails 6.0 at the time of this writing (see bottom notes)
NOTE - This process presumes using a Remote Node. I did not write the next steps for people using a Local Node. You can use this process to 13 if you are using a Local Node. Otherwise, do have a Remote Node address and port ready before starting this process.
1 - Open the GUI AppImage
2 - To the Would you like to register Monero GUI Desktop entry? reply Yes (replying Yes or No seems to make no difference)
3 - At the Welcome page, click Continue
4 - In the Mode Selection page, click Advanced mode (no, you do not have to d/l the full blockchain to use this mode. see further instructions)
5 - In the Welcome to Monero page, click Open a wallet from file
6 - In the Open a wallet from file page, click Browse filesystem
7 - In the Please choose a file popup, click the list icon in the bottom left corner of the popup to bring up the folders list on left side of popup
8 - In the folders list find and click on Home
9 - Under filename, find and double-click on Persistent
10 - This step depends on where you have the file stored. For me it's in Persistent/Monero/Wallets. Use the Filename list to find your wallet file, and double click on the .keys file
11 - In the password window, enter your passphrase for your wallet
12 - In the Starting local node popup, click Use custom settings (NOTE - Do this quickly, you have just 10 seconds before a local node d/l starts)
13 - In the Settings - Node page, click on Remote node, then click Add remote node
*****NOTE - If you're using a Local Node the above step is where you'd enter the file location and other parameters for starting your local node*****
14 - In the Add remote node popup, enter an Address and Port, such as - moneroxmrxw44lku6qniyarpwgznpcwml4drq7vb24ppatlcg4kmxpqd.onion 18089 (Yes, that's a working remote node address and port as of this writing), then click Ok
15 - You will see the newly-added address:port displayed underneath Add remote node. Click on the address to connect
16 - Wait a few minutes for the address to connect and synchronize the daemon and wallet. The more time your wallet has been offline, the longer this step will take
17 - Once Wallet and Daemon are synchronized your wallet is ready to be used. Note the Network status in bottom left corner should say Remote node.
18 - Go to Settings - Interface (tab to the left of Node in the page), and change any Interface settings you wish. For myself, I turn off (uncheck):
Check for updates periodically
Lock wallet on inactivity (Some people prefer this to be on, I don't)
Autosave slider to 30 minutes (10 minutes is too often, imo, ymmv)
Some people might want to turn on Day Mode (white background) by checking Light theme. I don't do that.
You are now up-and-running on the GUI wallet software. Everything appears to work as far as I can tell.
Now, the bad part about this. I haven't yet figured out how to get Tails to save my Settings, including using a Remote Node and saving the remote node addresses themselves. For some reason, even though I have the software and wallet file in my Persistent Storage, the setup and Settings are not being saved within the GUI software. This means THIS PROCESS HAS TO BE FOLLOWED AFTER EVERY RESTART OF TAILS. If someone knows how to fix that and retain the setup and Settings, please do tell us all.
Now, I'm not a technical person. It's taken me more than a day of playing around with the software to get this far. Anyone knows reasons to not do this, or a better way to go, please do tell us all, mates. The more we understand this the better off we'll be.
FINAL NOTE - The Feather Wallet AppImage for v2.6.3 does work with Tails 6.0. Be sure to use the 2.6.3-a download specifically for Tails if you decide to go with Feather until the official GUI is updated for Tails 6.0.
