MyMonero (the online wallet) : DarkNetMarkets | Torhoo darknet markets

Downloading Monero has been a total pain in the ass for me. I decided to use the online wallet so I can make purchases while I'm dealing with the freaking hemorrhoid. However I keep getting a "not secure" message. What's going on with that and how do I fix it?

No idea what message you're talking about as you haven't posted the link to the online wallet you're talking about. The legit MyMonero.com has a properly configured TLS cert for me. So it's possible you're on a phishing site or something is up with your computer.

With that said. Don't use an online wallet to make transactions. You severely reduce anonymity and you're defeating the purpose of using Monero.

Download the official Monero client, download the blockchain and use that. Not sure what problems you're having, but fix those rather than using an online client.

Edit: I see the message when going through Tor. They are intentionally blocking Tor exit nodes.

I'm currently pursuing this step..... It's very lengthy and time consuming one. I'm preying i don't get thrown anymore error messages once the Blockchain.raw has downloaded for the 2nd time, this time on its own, not synced through the GUI wallet. Sure is a pain in the ass, but i guess thats the price you pay for anonymity.....

I see the error message through Tor. MyMonero is blocking Tor exit nodes. It's redirecting them to blocked.mymonero.com which has a self-signed certificate.

Monero is resource intensive. Remember, when you download the blockchain, you are verifying each transaction ever made. This is CPU intensive, and somewhat write intensive.

It can take 1-2 days depending on internet speed and HDD/SSD speeds.

What error message did you get?

First time I lost internet in the middle of the download and even though I was more than 75% done, I had to start over because it wouldn't pick up where it left off.

2nd time I don't remember the message. I posted it back on Reddit at the time. Basically everyone said something about using someone else's something and it'd be best to just start over.

Thank you looking at it. Any idea why the'd be blocking Tor? Isn't the objection of both companies all about privacy?

If it stopped in the middle of download, it most likely was not starting over from scratch downloading. But it will re-verify, which is faster. But the GUI does a bad job telling you that.

You have to understand there is MoneroD (the daemon) and the GUI. There is sometimes lag between the two due to HDD and CPU bottleneck. So the GUI will flop all over the place and give inaccurate block sync info. It took me 2 days on a fast internet connection but typical HDD.

If you want to speed it up, get a SSD.

MyMonero.com is a different entity from the Monero team. I'm not sure the objective for MyMonero.com. But it certainly isn't privacy. Since they block Tor. You also have to be under the assumption that they log all data, and that they have your private keys. Since their servers generate the private key, you are trusting them to not store the private key. This is silly, since the point of Monero, and all Crypto IMO is to be trustless. No one can audit their code, unlike Monero.

I know I'm a bit of a blonde when it comes to anything other than turn a computer on ad off. What is a SSD? What all is it used for? Is it Blonde user friendly? Where do you get them?

To add, OPSEC is hard. If it were easy everyone would do it, and most people wouldn't get caught. But the fact of the matter is, cutting corners is how you get caught. Complacency is how you get caught.

Using MyMonero.com is poor OPSEC. Even if you were to trust that they don't store your private keys. The fact that they can record Monero transactions reduces the effectiveness of Monero.

Use the issues you're having as a learning experience. Learn about why you're having these issues. Read the Monero whitepaper (heck, read the Bitcoin whitepaper). You will see why using an Online Monero wallet doesn't make sense, and you will see why Bitcoin isn't anonymous. You will see why downloading the blockchain is important for OPSEC versus even using a remote node.

I've tried the whitepaper as suggested the last time I tried to download and it failed.

It looked like English. It had some English words thrown around here and there but it was all Greek to me.
