Look into the primary alkaloid mitragynine or one of it's metabolites 7-Hydroxymitragynine if you want to see where the effect is coming from or have a more powerful dose. You can often find these in presses of varying dosages at head shops depending on where you're located. I will caution you it is basically a legal opioid at that point and you can expect to literally be nodding at higher doses vs the more mild coffee-like boost of kratom powders. IMO kratom products have a high potential for addiction with a rapidly building tolerance.

For a basic intro to kratom from a harm reduction perspective see section 3.8.4 of The Drug Users Bible. You can download it via this post /post/17bc07880e7899aabe70 or by adding /DrugUsersBible.pdf to the end of the Dread onion. Alternatively go to the relevant page of DrugUsersBible(dot)Org (or click via Daunt).

Kratom is the direct leaf.

7-hydroxymitraganine is the primary psychoactive opiate that is potent like heroin.

If you want to get high like heroin, then you need to buy the 7-OH extract pills.

If you want to get a slight buzz then you buy the leaf kratom.

It's the wild west, there is no regulation.

I'll leave it to others to go over the details about the substance, but I know four people who went to rehab due to Kratom addiction, and one of them later died. So I"m not sure that it's as much of a stepdown from Heroin as some think it is. Infrequent use could be fine, but if you have an addictive brain, watch the fuck out, especially with the extracts. Oh and it now shows up on certain drug tests if that's a consideration.

A decent vendor with good info on the clearnet is Kats Botanicals. They test every batch and post the results, so you can look up the batch number on your order and see the specifics - testing for toxins in the soil, air, water that would leave residuals in the plant.
This is the site I buy from, though if my state passes the upcoming kratom ban I'm fucked, luckily kratom stays potent if stored correctly so I'm building a stash.

DMTrott's info is good, as are the warnings others have posted. It doesn't get me high or anything but it does hold off WDs when I run out of Rx meds, some level of pain control as well. It can become an addiction so proceed with caution, use responsibly.
