running a tor relay blocks me from certain websites ? : Tor | Torhoo darknet markets
i was running a tor node in my local network, but soon after i noticed that some websites just didnt worked, fully blocking my ip.
is that because of the node ? and if so would there be ways to avoid getting blocked other than a client vpn ?
check your ip with some blacklist checker.
blocking can be avoided with a regular proxy (costs money) and an i2p outproxy like stormcloud (free).
and thank you for running a relay!
Yes it's definitely because of the node. I was in a similar position as you, decided to do a nice thing by running a middle/guard node in my house because I thought there couldn't possibly be any downsides right? Only exit nodes have issues right? I was dead wrong. Few days later Netflix and Hulu stopped working in my household. My roommates were not happy... Had to reset my modem to get the IP to change and shutdown the server. From then on I only rented VPSes to host relays.
It's stupid in my opinion. I get Tor is the source of a lot of abuse but guard/middle nodes are getting blocked as well? Makes no sense because all traffic coming from Tor on the clearnet leaves exit nodes only, and there's even a nicely compiled list that the Tor project gives out of every exit node's IP for easy blocking. There is NO reason to block guard/middle nodes. Just hurts the nice people running a relay out of their homes.
