I've had experience with legendary European speed (think SSB) and Adderall. I actually prefer speed and I think I can explain why, you just have to look at molecular masses.
The Adderall mix has 62.57% freebase by mass, 47.49% D 15.08% L.
European speed's made by reacting DL-amphetamine freebase with SO4 to make racemic amphetamine sulfate. I think a smart cook figured this out and others copied. The sulfate is non-hygroscopic unlike salts like HCl and this salt is fairly efficient on paper, beating Adderall in some ways. 73.38% freebase by mass, 36.69% D 36.69% L. If you dose amphetamine by freebase you would need to take about 18% more Adderall to match the same dose of speed. That's assuming you have pure speed of course, a rare commodity in today's world.
I've never blind tested myself but I have a hard time telling the difference orally. Also anecdotally, speed is way easier to prepare for nasal spray so it's obvious which the winner is.
There are differences in how particular salts interact. But this isn't always clear. If you dig up the amphetamine phosphate patent (US2507468) the inventor claims it's more effective than sulfate despite having less freebase. I have no idea if this is any true, they assume the pharmacological differences are due to the higher solubility of the phosphate. The Adderall patent hinges on weak studies like Pubmed 17031708, "Adderall produces increased striatal dopamine release and a prolonged time course compared to amphetamine isomers" to prove it's better than Benzedrine. What is Benzedrine? Well it depends, they put amphetamine freebase soaked cottons in inhalers and amphetamine sulfate in pills. But the patents are long gone by now.
Tldr: Adderall exists because drug companies couldn't milk Benzedrine anymore since its exclusivity ended. Same idea for Adderall XR. Some credit goes to Vyvanse, which is actually a novel idea but it was also a way to sell Dexedrine exclusively again. Just tweaks to old drugs to rip people off on brand name prices.
D is smoother,stronger and helps to concentrate. This means you need more freebase (DL 1:1) for the same effect but a high dose brings problems with the L-amphetamine.
This means lowDose DL-A is like normal Adderall and real Adderall starts to beat it above 20mg.
