Tails persistance , updating doubts. I'm newbie : Tails | Torhoo darknet markets
Hi, I have some doubts about the use of Tails.
For the moment I use Tails without persistence, and when there is an update to make, i use Windows with ProtonVPN and i download the recent ISO from the official website (after this i will use rufus)
What do you think about it?Is it safe?
I would currently like to activate persistence but first I would like to ask some questions.
Once the persistence is active, I suppose that I can no longer update Tails manually with Rufus otherwise I would overwrite everything.
So I will be forced to update Tails through the popup that comes out on the screen. Does the update happen automatically via Tor, or with my connection without Tor ?
Will the popup update overwrite all information saved on my Tails? Or not? Am i obligated to make a backup? Also, how does the backup with Tails work?
I apologize in advance for my very bad English and my little knowledge of this world, I'm trying to learn. Thanks to everyone.
Update happens mostly automatically, although you are prompted at time to proceed or wait.
No, the popup upgrade to Tails just updates Tails, and leaves persistance alone.
You're not required to make a backup. You should back up your persistance to multiple USB's just in case something goes wrong you'll have a backup.
You backup persistance by making a new Tails USB stick, booting it up and making persistant Storage. Then boot from your working Tails USB stick, and run Applications - System Tools - Back up persistant storage
Works fine for me so far.
Furthermore, does the update happen automatically via Tor, or with my connection without Tor ?
There are selections you can make for KeePass, GNUPG (includes Kleopatra data), and DotFiles. You can look the selections up to see what they cover. There are a lot, most not needed for Tails for the dn, imo.
