Trump Pardons Creator of Silk Road Drug Marketplace : DarkNetMarkets | Torhoo darknet markets

According to The New York Times. Trump fulfilled his day one promise and pardoned Ross.

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/21/technology/trump-ross-ulbricht-silk-road.html

President Trump on Tuesday granted a pardon to Ross Ulbricht, the creator of the Silk Road drug marketplace and a cult hero in the cryptocurrency and libertarian worlds.

In doing so, Mr. Trump fulfilled a promise that he made repeatedly on the campaign trail as he courted political contributions from the crypto industry, which spent more than $100 million to influence the outcome of the election. A Bitcoin pioneer, Mr. Ulbricht, 40, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole in 2015, after he was convicted on charges that included distributing narcotics on the internet.

“I just called the mother of Ross William Ulbright to let her know,” Mr. Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social, misspelling Mr. Ulbricht’s name and making a reference to federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York. “The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern day weaponization of government against me.”

In its nearly three years of existence, Silk Road, which operated in a shady corner of the internet known as the dark web, became an international drug marketplace, facilitating more than 1.5 million transactions, including sales of heroin, cocaine and other illicit substances. (The site generated over $200 million in revenue, according to authorities.) In court, prosecutors claimed that Mr. Ulbricht had also solicited the murders of people whom he considered threats — but acknowledged there was no evidence that the killings took place.

Despite his crimes, Mr. Ulbricht has remained popular with crypto enthusiasts because Silk Road was one of the first venues where people used Bitcoin to buy and sell goods. For years, his supporters have argued that his sentence was overly punitive and adopted the slogan “Free Ross” online and at industry gatherings.

“It’s hard to argue that Ross Ulbricht wasn’t the most successful and influential entrepreneur of the early Bitcoin era,” said Pete Rizzo, an editor at the news publication Bitcoin Magazine. “This is the industry banding together and saying, ‘We’re going to reclaim our own.’”

Mr. Ulbrich’s pardon was eagerly anticipated by crypto enthusiasts. On Monday, after Mr. Trump granted clemency to nearly 1,600 people charged in connection with the Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, Elon Musk, one of the president’s biggest supporters, responded to a concerned post on X, writing that “Ross will be freed too.”

Mr. Ulbricht, who grew up in Austin, Texas, was arrested in 2013, after the F.B.I. tracked him down at a library in San Francisco. At his sentencing in Federal District Court in Manhattan two years later, a judge called Mr. Ulbricht “the kingpin of a worldwide digital drug-trafficking enterprise” and said that his actions were “terribly destructive to our social fabric.”

At least six deaths were attributable to drugs bought on Silk Road, prosecutors said. Addressing the court, the father of one of the people who died said that “all Ross Ulbricht cared about was his growing pile of Bitcoins.”

But the life sentence struck many observers as harsh. In 2017, the federal appeals court for the Second Circuit, in affirming Mr. Ulbricht’s conviction, acknowledged the severe nature of the punishment.

“Although we might not have imposed the same sentence ourselves in the first instance,” the court said, “on the facts of this case a life sentence was within the range of permissible decisions that the district court could have reached.”

Mr. Ulbricht has been serving his sentence at a federal prison in Tucson, Ariz. Supporters in the crypto industry, in calling for his release, have noted that he was convicted of a nonviolent crime and was never tried on prosecutors’ most explosive allegation that he paid to have people killed. At a Bitcoin conference in Miami in 2021, Mr. Ulbricht’s supporters played a recording of him speaking from prison.

“I had so many big dreams for Bitcoin,” he said.

Last year, Mr. Trump embraced Mr. Ulbricht’s cause on the campaign trail, first in a speech at a libertarian event and later at an annual Bitcoin conference in Nashville. He doubled down on social media, posting the hashtag #FreeRossDayOne on Truth Social, the site he owns.

After the election, a message from Mr. Ulbricht posted on X said he had “immense gratitude to everyone who voted for President Trump on my behalf.”

“I can finally see the light of freedom at the end of the tunnel,” the post said.

I kind of doubt ross wants to be involved with a place like dread in any way whatsoever right now. Dude was looking at life I prison without parole and is now getting his first taste of freedom in over a decade. Guessing he wants to lay low for a bit.

I agree. Granted THE second chance of a lifetime. The agony he and his family must have gone through. 11 years, every single night laying on a steel slab with a thin piece of foam, staring at the ceiling and thinking about how you'll never see freedom again. How you will never sit down at the dinner table with your family EVER again. Eating a dry thin slice of turkey doused in thin brown water, thickened with God knows how much cornstartch to make it resemble gravy. Every Christmas spent alone in a cell. Every New Years eve spent thinking about how the next 60 NYEs will be just like the last 11. The only thing to look forward to is the next commissary order. Days blending into months, months blending into years, years into decades. Burdened by the guilt, shame, and remorse. Being treated like you're subhuman. Talked down to and yelled at and ordered around by Corrections Officers, young and old alike. The tough, rude, obnoxious young COs with something to prove and always looking for a fight. The fat, miserable veteran COs that are about 2/3rds through their career and gave up on life around the halfway point. A long, sad and poinless job of babysitting adult men their entire life, often working multiple 16+ hour shifts per week. Filling up on fast-food and the food in the Officers Dining Room (which is basically fast-food) with a static blood-pressure that is 2x their IQ. No peace and quiet. Inmates screaming and yelling all day and night. Idk. Ross proabably probably can't even stomach looking at an onion in Kroger.

stop lol, I just got out of prison and you're triggering my PTSD... for real though, those of you who haven't been, that's about what it's like... only worse... there's a certain something about being incarcerated that descriptions made of words can never capture or convey and can only be understood when experienced first-hand... it's awful in a way that nothing else is, and you realize how much we all take freedom for granted on a whole new level. I only did 6 months, baby sentence, I can't imagine 11 years... I was in for something dumb though... Ross was sent away on trumped up charges for leading an institution that represented something he believed in and was passionate about... im not sure whether that would make make the long sleepless nights alone with only your thoughts easier or more difficult... I'd have to ask him.

I agree, he could start a podcast of his own right now and never have to work except for the podcast lol. He'll probably make the rounds like you said on Rogan etc, then start something of his own. Everyone would want to come on his show or podcast. Needless to say he's good financially because of the podcast or show opportunity, even if he doesn't have any bitcoin stowed away in some old wallets lol. My one and only issue is there was a gray area about whether he ordered an actual hit on someone. If he actually ordered that I have a problem with it. If he just ordered a little intimidation that's different but I know the undercover guy did send him fake pics of what he'd supposedly done to Ross' former employee that had betrayed him. That is unless the book was wrong. Speaking of the book, how about the 2 crooked guys supposedly trying to help catch him that were just trying to steal bitcoin for themselves lol? Did they really think they would get away with that? So stupid

not to mention, I'm beyond sure the dude managed to ferret away quite a bit of Bitcoin before he was caught... they got a lot of it, but he had long suspected they were onto him by then...I would bet everything i own that he stuffed a whole bunch somewhere they couldn't ever find it, just in case... after all, isn't that kinda one if the main purposes of Bitcoin in the first place? lol... plus, given the crypto markets since then...a few million in bitcoin circa 2012 in today's market makes him a very wealthy man today... maybe even wealthy enough to make 11 to years in the feds worth it, lol...

No it literally follows it as closely as possible, my views have always been libertarian. You just expect to allow any market to promote immediately, without allowing a process of checks first? The only person to have problems with that is someone who was declined by the DNM staff because their market didn't make the requirements, or in your case, your market was hacked. Once again, that process has nothing to do with me or Paris, we just follow it as a baseline for being allowed to promote on Dread, rather than having our own process to manage.

You would have to have Ads unless you've got a hell of a lot of money to put behind it yourself. Services only want Ads when they are more effective in capturing traffic from downed markets. Outside of that it isn't worth them buying Ads other than for brand recognition purposes because every user is going to just make their own informed decisions of where they go until a market exit scams and everything is up in the air with users trying to find their regular vendors elsewhere.

I never even mentioned anything for the anniversary of Cazes death, what was posted for that? As for this, its big news and I simply mentioned an AMA with him in the future would be cool, I'm sure everyone here would love to ask him questions, I'm not confident on it happening but that is absolutely not be cashing in on it. The only time we ever "profit" is unfortunately when a market does exit scam because everyone comes here for answers and where to go, that's just a side effect of the benefits to the platform.

Promoted posts are scheduled you have to pre-select dates and they don't go through any approval processes. I've refunded promoted posts that were in bad taste in the past, but the only time where markets would really benefit is during an exit scam at which point we switch to a rotational promoted post pool that all of the markets can split between themselves. Someone might benefit off having a promoted post at the same time as big news, but definitely right now it wasn't intentional by any means. What are you suggesting, we have to disable ads when there is any sort of news?

He actually did it, the absolute madman

I just called the mother of Ross William Ulbricht to let her know that in honor of her and the Libertarian Movement, which supported me so strongly, it was my pleasure to have just signed a full and unconditional pardon of her son, Ross. The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern day weaponization of government against me. He was given two life sentences, plus 40 years. Ridiculous!

but aside from that, its beyond anything this FINALLY happening, and him ACTUALLY coming home ...... so grateful for that. for him. for his mom. so amazing. my mom for some reason & somehow was put in touch with his mother this last time i was in prison just to talk. i was like "mom why are you bothering that poor women. jesus h. somebodys christ." lmfao

Just my opinion. Even if he has some stashed away somewhere, I don't think he will touch it. He already got fucked over once. I think the FBI would love to throw him back in prison for making them look bad. My guess he will know he has a target on him and will lay low.

I worked with a couple federal organizations when I was in the military. We were attached to the DEA for a minute, among others.

All I've got to say is these are some of the slimiest, most sociopathic demons I've ever met. Spending any time around the feds and you will lose all hope and respect for our government, if you ever had any. Destroying people's lives for fun. And the sad part is the amount of people in those organizations who enable them thinking they're "doing their patriotic duty."

I will not be surprised if they attempt to butt fuck him in some other way. Somebody angry their case failed is going to be following the guy.

/u/SlutFarmer

If you've worked with these people at a higher level where politics become involved, it's entirely power and contradictory factions moving on each other. They don't act under moral authority or even trying to attain prosecution rates or "success", it's about supporting the political stance and reach of their masters. I watched the DEA pour millions of dollars and man hours fighting the opium trade in the Middle East only to see the same organizations kill entire villages defending poppy farms in Sangin. On the surface somebody like Ross Ulbricht looks like they're sending a message about selling drugs or trying to "break the system", but in reality the focus didn't laser in on him until became obvious they couldn't control bitcoin. As the saying goes "don't fuck with my money." These people have a house of cards that depends on treasury nodes and the Israel/US central banking paradigm. They will push endless wars and countless genocides until they have authoritarian control over all world finance, hence multiple life sentences for a guy who didn't sell a single drug. These people are ontologically evil and no act against them can be considered immoral.
/u/ganyo
1 points
I agree with you totally, its all about POWER & MONEY, if you follow the money you will see the real faces behind the curtains.
Once they are not the one in control they will go to any extent to destroy you. Look at the destruction in Afghanistan? All because of opium.
The insistent that all countries should adopt CBDC (central bank digital currency) so that the house of cards can survive.

I don't know exactly how it works, but a full Presidential pardon pretty much is a blanket thing where he wouldn't be prosecuted at all for anything even remotely related to those cases -- and that includes any BTC stash he has somewhere.

He couldn't go out and commit a new murder of course, but he's basically untouchable for anything in the past no matter what.
/u/BananaJam

The actual document has not been released from what I can tell, so this would depend on exactly what he was pardoned for/how i.e. time frame vs crime etc.
However, it is almost certain that they could charge him if he used proceeds of a crime or laundered the money. He can't be tried for the same crime but it doesn't grant immunity,
/u/FirePerhaps
1 points

It really depends on what exactly the document says. Biden pardoned his son for all crimes he was accused of and also any other crimes that he could ever be accused of or anything he did within a period of several years.

a lot of it is already in the hands of the government and chain analysis groups have done a lot of work on tracking which addresses are related to silk road. too risky to cash it out

the freeross site has a page with crypto wallets you can send donations to for him and the btc address alone has just under $150k right now. doesn't compare to the silk road profits but it's enough for him to not worry about money for a while.

Trump called for drug dealers to be given the death penalty. This is not a new era. Trump pardoned Ross because the libertarian party didn't split the vote in swing states. This was a transaction, simple as that. Under diffrant condtions Trump would be calling for Ross to get the death penalty.

How is it victimless if he setup a market that has people selling bad drugs that killed several? Not saying he knew the vendors were selling bad drugs but by default he's to blame for setting the scene. we must understand that he is going to lay low for sure, and even if he opens up a new market we will never know it's him again.
and we are most probably not gonna hear from him anywhere anyways, but still. i'm very happy for him. i know he was framed for a lot of what he did

I think it would be suicide to try launch another DNM but I wouldn't discount him creating a darknet free speech platform of some sort, and re-raising his book club. The only way he's bringing Silk Road back is if he moves out of the USA and to some country with no extradition laws where he plans never to travel the world for fear of being snatched by interpol.

First, I would like to express my thoughts on Ross Ulbricht. While the Silk Road he created involved some illegal activities, I believe his original intention was to promote a decentralized free market, aiming to free people from the constraints of traditional finance and government regulation. Although Silk Road, as a platform, made mistakes that led to a series of negative consequences, I believe many underestimate his contributions to technology, privacy protection, and digital currency. In my personal view, while Ross took a controversial path, he remains a symbol of innovation and the freedom of thought. Although life is always filled with ups and downs, I’ve always believed in the power of technology. Over the past period, I’ve encountered some difficulties and complex situations, and when faced with technical bottlenecks, I’ve felt somewhat helpless. Whenever I run into seemingly insurmountable obstacles, I think about how, perhaps, with some deeper technical support, I could find a way to solve the problem. After all, in our information-driven era, technology offers unprecedented solutions that can help us overcome the challenges we face.

/u/rehabdoll
1 points

Does anyone find this little bit suspicious of this? Like, what if he been released him as an attempt to take darknet users down? What if that's part of his release terms? I know it's been 11 years and a lot has changed. But I can't shake off this feeling. The man has been complaining about drugs since the beginning of his first term. Most notably, fentanyl. It's one of the reasons hes suggested building walls and annexing other countries So, how exactly is he benefitting from this experience? Because it's the opposite of what stands form mɓ I'm happy ross is out, I just really hope it doesn't come at a cost.

While I am no fan of Trump or anyone in the political world whatsoever... and I also cannot see this being done for reasons that are anything other than self-serving PR stunt for Trump. I can't see how Ross being released is capable of being weaponized against the current operation of the onion fields. How are you seeing his release possibly being used somehow against the DNMs?

Excellent PR stunt by Drumpf. Happy for Ross. Opinion of politicians and the elite across the board is unchanged. Trump has not differentiated himself in my view by getting this done, despite it being inherently positive... I cannot see the intentions behind it being anything other than self-serving.

Edit: Skimming through this thread and seeing people actually considering the possibility that Ross may open a new market. There's no fucking chance lmaooooo. You've gotta be retarded to expect that with any degree of seriousness.

this is bullshit, it's so unfair.
we need to all DEMAND that darkweb markets are legal now. if he gets pardoned for trafficking WEAPONS, ASSASSINATION SERVICES and SLAVERY, then why do other darkweb market owners get arrested for trafficking only drugs and fraud?

this is NOT FAIR. fuck trump, i lost all respect for that selfish egoistic cocksucker.

so according to trump, every non-violent trafficking crime is legal now. good to know. i should go to USA and do lot of non-violent crimes, because according to trump it's legal. fucking selfish mug.

i'd happily take 10-15 years in prison if i can come out as billionaire! imagine all the BTC he has, back then BTC was so cheap, he probably has billions worth of BTC. anyone would happily go to prison for 10-15 years to come out as billionaire. fuck america and their egoistic shit.

i say all darkweb markets need to be made legal now!

Trump's decision to pardon the creator of Silk Road is sure to spark a lot of discussions about justice, online marketplaces, and the implications for digital privacy.

After those next 4 years the collective mindset is ready for going after the fat people. No matter what color or nationality.

As in: Loading them into Chinooks or C-17s and dropping the cargo over the ocean. Including a Live-stream, multi-angle ofc, and pay-per-view that directly goes into the national-crypto-fund. Maybe interviews even. Something like

>Hey Steven. You look pretty fat. Regretting any life-choices? Last time to say them before Private Smith violently throws you out there. Also, if you do both thumbs up and say "Coca Cola Light" we´ll wire your family 500$ and a Dominos voucher"

God I wish

There is a thought that crossed my mind when i saw this, that ross, somehow, is paying his way out, maybe with the bitcoins we know he hid somewhere and the feds never got access to? who knows. maybe trump is just head to head with the people who tried to frame him and kill him? it could be just a political move. he probably does not care about ross.

Seems you missed my valid point. He opened a market for dealers, so he's responsible for what happens from the market. It's called Liability.
They didn't even convict him of the deaths caused by the market either.

I do know the facts of the case, and yes the government made this argument and secured the conviction but he still technically did not deal himself is all I was saying.
