Unknown User when logged in to Daunt : Daunt | Torhoo darknet markets
I apologize if this is a stupid question.
Is it supposed to say unknown user when logged in to Daunt? I was under the impression it would say my username and have private mirrors there (correct me if I'm wrong).
I have gone back to the faq and re-read it maybe I'm reading it wrong.
The reason why it shows "unknown user" is because daunt doesn't know the user who is signed in at all. The daunt Static Key has minimal information about the user's dread activity in encrypted form. It includes adjusted variable values (to mask who exactly it is) like account age, posts, votes, if they are a premium member, and an extra internally encrypted PGP fingerprint id. No name at all. Thus we show unknown user.
We do this for a couple reasons. One is that people can safely use this variable on the clearnet. Being there is no anonymizing layer network protection we fully assume the server will be seized or monitored and we wanted to make sure there is no value to do so. The information they could get from the internal values is basically nothing. The only thing which can really tell directly who the user is (the PGP fingerprint id) is encrypted with a different key that the clearnet server simply doesn't have. Only the onion server has the key to decrypt the value of the PGP fingerprint id. This is why admins can't edit their site on the clearnet version.
Smart design if I must say. It was a core focus on daunt to make it possible that people can safely get trusted links on the clearnet without harming the privacy of the user themselves. The values are caped as well so those who have significantly higher posts, comments, and age (like me and hug) can't be deanonymized either. Not that we really worry about that because we now both use Qubes OS.
Thank you for such an in depth and thorough response. I got a lot of information from that. I guess I don't meet all the required factors for a private mirror yet. One day I shall. Stay safe and thank you.
