Overpopulation is bullshit. All the issues ascribed to "overpopulation" (environmental degradation, climate change, deforestation, drought, wildfires, etc etc etc) are caused by wealthy capitalist corporate and governmental entities, as well as wealthy people and wealthy nations, engaging in wasteful or extravagantly wasteful behavior that is unnecessary.
Like, the poor farmer in Africa is not responsible for most of the damage going on. The issues that we do have, are wasteful practices of large institutions and wasteful practices normalized in wealthy cultures.
We could support many many times our current global population, if those issues were resolved through effective planning. However, our economic and cultural and political systems are designed to protect those entities, not challenge them and make them better.
& don't forget the US military, which if it was a country unto itself would be in the top 10 for emissions - but thanks to accounting tricks gets to hide most of its fossil fuel usage as 'bunker fuel' & not count it
basically get rid of our bloated stinking corpse of a military industrial complex, shove Bill Gates, King Charles, Agustin Carstens & the rest of the central bankers & climate pimps down the hole after it, & you'll find the world suddenly has enough resources to support billions more people. standard of living will increase dramatically. can't have that, i suppose
We need to scale down the level of consumption in rich countries, primarily targeting the large corporate and government entities which produce the vast majority of problems like population which make the world less livable in the long term due to their bad stewardship of the environment. The population is stabilizing around 10 billion, and it will be very possible to provide every one of those people with an adequate standard of living if we make efficiency improvements to our systems, and reduce wealth inequality globally. However, to do that, everyday people will have to take control of their workplaces, and institute workplace democracy. Additionally, the most brutal and extractive industries have to be shut down, maybe by legal means like laws and courts and presidential actions, but realistically it will be resistance from everyday people in broad coalitions coming together to fight against the most egregious corporate and government organizations which do most of the destructive activity and funnel wealth upward to the elite.
evidently i'm very late to respond but i came across this thread so why not... can we start by agreeing that your proposition of reducing wealth inequality is unrealistic and will probably never happen? similar things that you recommend go against human nature (well, i don't know whether things like greed are considered human nature or merely taught). i agree with it from a fantasy idealistic perspective but that's about it, i mean hey there's a reason so many people are on the DN in the first place committing crimes usually fucking people over for financial gain (wealth inequality). many of us find a lot of 'selfish' joy in knowing that if we don't like working we can hustle our asses off and retire asap. the other apparent flaw under your proposition of wealth equality is there being no incentive to innovate knowing the compensation won't be financial. again it works in an ideal world where we're all happy perfect humans but the truth is i don't care about starting a company for the sake of my compensation to be "acknowledgement for making the world a better place" or whatever, i want to be rewarded by not having to slave away 8 hours a day (but the funds for this causes wealth inequality). perhaps /u/cthulhuskittens who replied to your comment can shine in on this one, though he didn't mention anything about this. @cthulu good point in your reply too
Wealth inequality has fluctuated dramatically even within the last few generations, in many countries.
It is currently getting more extreme, but these things ebb and flow. Usually, because the rich take things way too far, and then a collapse occurs. Or, a pandemic that reduces the labor supply.
In fact, the origin of capitalism in the modern world, is largely due to the bubonic plague in the 1300s reducing the labor supply in Europe by 1/3-1/2. This created the conditions for the value of labor to increase, which allowed for the concentration of wealth in cities once again (the latifundia/serfdom, being what destroyed the roman empire and redistributed wealth & population out of the cities and into the countryside), leading to the high medieval period, the italian rennaisance, mechanical engineering innovations, mass production, and the imperial age of capitalism.
It's not "idealistic" to understand history..."human nature" arguments are like, 1700s-era philosophy. It's what a dumb guy thinks a smart guy sounds like. There is no "human nature". There is just human activity and behavior, which is always shaped by the conditions of human society and the environment within which we make our choices and create our own culture.
Literally all of this is constantly changing lol. You should really think about how you've outsourced your brain to people who profit off of you...jfc
more people more problems, and its usually the not so bright people procreating. Watch the movie Idiocracy, maybe that will help you to understand more
