Pepper spray seems like your best option, you can easily make it at home too if it is banned where you're at. I think a lazer wouldn't be the most effective because you HAVE to get the exact lazer point directly in their eye. imagine a dude charging at you, you gotta take out the lazer turn it on and pray you get them precisley in the eyes, with all that commotion going on, and on top of that you could fuck yourself if it gets in your eyes, as you so said too. Pepper spray has its problems but it seems like a better option as it will work just by spraying it in the general direction of the face, and can work pretty far from over a meter away if you can get or make it as a powerful pressurized canister meant for bears.
